It depends on the species tree.Some species don't live too long, maybe 40 or 50 years for some palm trees, but some can live up to 5000 years, such as the Bristlecone Pine (Pinus longaeva).

Most tree species live on the order of one to a few hundred years, and so will easily outlive a person, and can also outlive some countries. For example, many of the giant redwoods on the central coast of California were alive when Christopher Columbus discovered the new world, and were alive when the founding fathers rebelled against England, and will still be around in another several hundred years.

Trees can live anywhere from less than 100 years up to more than a few thousand years. It all depends on what type of tree it is. In the United States, the tree with the longest lifespan is the bristle cone pine,which grows in the mountains of Nevada and southern California. A singletree can live up to 5,000 years!

This Past week on November 28th 2012 The Rockefeller Christmas lighting tradition took place and is been taking place since 1933. Many of the trees decorations were given by donors.

The late David Murbach, Manager of the Gardens Division of Rockefeller Center, searchs for a tree on a helicopter in the areas of Connecticut, Vermont, Ohio, upstate New York, New Jersey, and even Ottawa, Canada. When a tree is chosen, a crane supports it while it is cut, and moves it to a custom telescoping trailer that can transport trees up to 125 feet (38 m) tall, but the width of New York City streets passing through Rockefeller Center limits the height of the trees to 110 feet (34 m).
When they locate the tree on the Rockefeller Center, then they attach four guy-wires at its midpoint, and by a steel spike at its base. The star that has topped the tree since 2004 is 9.5 feet (2.9 m) in diameter and weighs 550 pounds (250 kg). This "Swarovski Star" was created by German artist Michael Hammers, who in 2009 additionally designed his own star lighting production.


The unofficial history of the tradition started on the Depression-era construction of Rockefeller Center, when workers from there decorated a smaller 20 feet (6.1 m) tree with "strings of cranberries garlands of paper, and even a few tin cans" on December 24, 1931.
There was no Christmas tree in 1932. The decorated Christmas tree remains lit at Rockefeller Center through January 6. Then it is removed and gets recycled for many other uses. In 2007, they changed the lights to conserve energy.The tall est Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center was a 100 feet (30 m) spruce erected on November 11, 1999.

Where Is The Tallest Tree In New York State?

A naturalist in Mill Neck, NY says a tulip tree on Long Island stretches 167 feet into the sky. That would make it the tallest tree in New York State!

Environmentalist consultant Daniel Karpen arrived at the tree to measure it with a clinometer. The 100 year old tulip tree measured 34 inches in diameter.

Currently, the Native Tree Society reports that the tallest tree in New York State is a 158.3 foot white pine in Adirondack Park. The tallest recorded tulip tree is in Zoar Valley coming in 156 feet.

There are no official records kept on tree height!
