NYC has new evacuation zones, "The new Zones, 1 through 6, which will replace Zones A, B and C, now include an additional 600,000 New Yorkers not included within the boundaries of the former zones."
Now people can visit  www.nyc.gov or call 311 to find out if their homes or businesses fall within the boundaries of a new city hurricane evacuation zone.
The mayor's office says that the new "zones are based on coastal flood risk resulting from storm surge - the 'dome' of ocean water propelled by the winds and low barometric pressure of a hurricane; the geography of the city’s low-lying neighborhoods; and the accessibility of these neighborhoods by bridge and roads." And the new zones "include an additional 600,000 New Yorkers not included within the boundaries of the former zones. The increased number of zones will provide the City with more flexibility in targeting areas to evacuate in advance of a predicted storm."

Is Long sland Ready For Another Hurricaine?

Hurricane season is here and are we ready for another hurricane? while many changes have been implemented some things haven't changed much. According to news 12 and their latest's reports we are still on risk of being hit and damaged as we did a year ago.

Robert Sinclair from AAA said "We are, in essence, in the same place we were last October"

Sandy destroyed 90 % of the waterside terminals in New York Harbor, which handles fuel deliveries from tankers and pipelines to our area. Sinclair says almost nothing has been done to storm proof those terminals in the aftermath of Sandy. Although Gov. Cuomo order that all the gas stations must have generators this measure will be effective until next year which means we are no different than last yr.

LIPA was largely criticized on how they responded to the customers and the way  they approached the chaos but LIPA has already handed a major part to its partner National Grid which will end the contract with LIPA in 2014. LIPA insist that's they have made some major changes to act if another natural disaster occurs.

 Experts agree there will be another big storm like Sandy, and they say Long Islanders need to be prepared for this type of occurrence once in a while.

Scientists say they have a pretty good understanding of how storm patterns move in large areas like the Atlantic. The difficulty comes when you're forecasting for a small, highly populated area like Long Island. 

However, as scientists try to understand what's happening to weather patterns the stakes are getting higher. Officials say heavy shoreline development on Long Island is a bulls-eye for future super storms. 

Experts say climate change occurs over decades, so the best defense is to make our area less vulnerable.

Problems After Sandy

It's been already 2 Months since the Sandy Hurricane hit the East Coast, but many problems seem to be still here not going away for many residents. The accumulation of debris its a big problem, stumps not being removed yet and garbage disposal are the main problems of why this hasn't gone away yet.

When a natural disaster like sandy occurs security goes first, emergencies go on the top of the list , the most important thing is to secure that no one gets hurt and the most dangerous situations get fixed first. The problem is that many emergencies happened at the same time and the minor and last details after a while are amounting.

Problem #1 Some debris hasn't been picked up and still on the streets because the town isn't coming around soon enough. Well what you can do its make sure you and your neighbors are on top of the town but sometimes there is certain debris that they wont pick up. Debris being picked up from tree companies may be taking a little bit of time too and also depending on when you go the job done, after a natural disaster for everything to be taken away 100% can even take up to 4 weeks.

Problem #2  Sumps not being removed yet, well this one should be the least of the problems although they arent good for the view te emergency is gone, the fallen tree. There is aproximatelly 3,000 to 4,000 stumps to be removed in NY. These will be taken down is an slower pace.  


Problem #3   Garbage disposal, This is the main cause of why problem #1 and problem #2 still exist...there is no place to throw out debris. All the places where the goverment and tree companies dispose all the garbage and full. In many places like in Floyd Bennett Field started burning out debris. The American Lung Association is against this while the enviromental office says its the safest alternative we have. The only way this can be solved unfortunatelly its with time and contacting the goverment so they can help long island to get rid of the debris problem.

This past October 29th when Hurricane sandy hit, many companies were put through a test. The test of reliability, while many companies showed their true colors other prevailed.

One of the best things that you can do for your self, as it seems its getting more common to face natural disasters in our areas (Irene 2011, Sandy 2012) , we should take notes and know what steps to take so thing doesn't happen to us ever again.

Make sure you have a good insurance and know what the insurance covers, study every single clause. As it was learned after sandy many houses didn't even know if they houses were protected for natural disasters. Others had many troubles because insurances didn't respond to them as it was needed and many didn't even know what action to take or didn't even know how to process an insurance claim.

Make sure you have coverage of natural disasters, including tree removal. This although more expensive will be better than having to pay for the damage out of pocket at the end of the day because you weren't covered for it.

On October 29, 2012 and weeks before AAA Tree Service was making sure some people were getting ready to receive Super Storm Sandy. The day of the hurricane AAA Tree Service also worked and did the same for consecutive weeks helping all the disaster areas all over long island.

When a natural disaster just like sandy happens the last thing that some homeowners may think is why would someone out there would be trying to take advantage out of someone who is in such helpless situation? but unfortunately you see it happening all the time, people trying to benefit from someones misfortune.

There are ways on how you can avoid this happening to you, we know many times is hard to focus on all the things that are happening at the time with a cold perspective, but following these simple steps you will avoid anyone taking advantage.

New York General Eric Schneiderman  gave steps and what you need to do after a hurricane happens.

1. Check with you insurance company: Make sure that before the disaster happens that you will be covered by your insurance and which are the steps to follow after a disaster to be ready ahead and not do everything last minute when other people are trying to do the same at the same time. 
2. Do your homework and investigate the person you will hire: Make sure they have a license to operate, insurance and they can do the job you require them to do. 
3. You can ask them for estimates in writing: the best way to go about it is by asking them to fax it directly to your insurance company, this way the process will be shorten and move faster just make sure that the work that will be provided is well specified in details. 
4. Know you customer rights and remember your customer responsibilities too.
5. Always use a local contractor: Verify this contractors aren't "Here today and Gone Tomorrow," local contractors may be high on demand but its better to be safe than sorry. "You don't usually find legitimate contractors knocking on doors offering to do this sort of thing" if you see someone doing that, its a big red flag!!! 
6. Don't Pay all the money before they start the job: Legit contractors know the business and know that paying all up front can be difficult, do payments like half before start and the other half after the job is finished, this way you are protecting your assets and good contractors will know its a proper way to do business 
7. Check your town's tree removal requirements: Although many times they tend to be waved when a disaster such sandy occurs but its good you ask just in case. 

*As a personal advise make sure your case is an emergency, many times we have to realize that although we all have our own priorities there is always someone who can be in worse situation than us, try not to panic. 
Tree companies want to help everyone but its understandable that many situations can be worse than others and it may take sometime for them to come around due to the high demand after a natural disaster.
Just remember that is not the same a tree inside someone's residence, than a tree that felt on the lawn on a back yard so please be understandable, patient and use common sense, this will help you to not be a victim of a scam*

HOW TO PREPARE FOR HURRICANE SANDY

A Hurricane Is a strong tropical storm forming in a circle shape. Hurricane sandy is expected to mix with the west cold air and become bigger and stronger going towards the northeast area, however in these type of occasions the best thing for you and your family its be protected. Which can make an imminence difference is how ready you are for a natural disaster such as this. Sandy could bring heavy rain, hurricane force wind gusts, power outages, beach erosion and coastal flooding.

FEMA has released steps to follow which recommends to build a kit for your basic necessities during a natural disaster. 

Make sure you know all the shelters located in your area as well. 

FEMA recommends:

Flashlight, Batteries
to turn off utilities such as gas
Local maps
Cell phone with chargers, inverted or solar charger" and only to use them for emergency calls to save battery.
Fill your tank with gas, be ready to evacuate if you have to

For personal use don't forget: 

Water at least 1 gallon per person
Food and provisions for at least  2 days, food needs to be non-perishable such as canned food and dont forget the manual can oppener
First aid kit
Supplies personal sanitation

Never forget important documents, birth certificates, insurance policies, deeds or Id's.

To protect your property close windows & doors, you can board them up with 5'8 plywood.

Make a Family Emergency Plan

FEMA's advicing everyone to make a family plan for emergencies, sharing information like addresses and phone numbers to keep with them at all times.
