Fertilizing

631-993-1039 / 516-659-4716
Trees growing in their natural habitat should have access to all of the minerals they need to survive and grow.  Anything you can do to mimic that habitat can reduce the need for fertilizer.  This may include letting leaves remain on the ground in the fall instead of raking them up.  Chances are, though, that despite your best efforts, the need for fertilizer will not be entirely eliminated.

Most trees experience a single flush of growth during spring followed by slower growth throughout the summer and fall. Because of this single flush of growth, it is desirable to have nutrients available to the tree as this growth is about to occur. The most beneficial time to apply fertilizer is from when the ground is workable in the spring until just before trees start growing in early May. On sandy soils, applications should be split, half in early spring and half in mid- to late May.

During the growing season, fertilizing can help a tree overcome mineral deficiencies and fight off infections.  If you are fertilizing in mid- to late summer, avoid formulations high in nitrogen as this will just promote weak, new growth that may be easily damaged in the winter.

Why Are Trees So Special?

631-993-1039 / 516-659-4716

From the beginning of time trees have been essential for this earth and humans, they provide us with 2 special components and basic elements such as Oxygen and Food.

Trees provide is with additional necessities like shelter, medicine and tools, etc.

These are 10 reasons why trees are important.
  1. They're beautiful.
  2. They provide a habitat for animals and birds.
  3. Homes and people get shade from the sun in the summer.
  4. Homes get the energy benefit from the winter sun once the leaves fall from the trees.
  5. Trees prevent soil erosion thanks to their root systems.
  6. Trees clean the air. Their leaves absorb nitrous oxides, sulphur dioxide, carbon monoxide and ground-level ozone, all of which contribute to air pollution.
  7. Trees can also serve as a barrier from the wind which can really blow hard where we live.
  8. Trees can provide fruit which is incredibly delicious, and help you save money on groceries.
  9. Trees can provide a place for children to play.
  10. Trees increase property value.

Mulch

631-993-1039 / 516-659-4716

Every year Mulch is used on houses in flower beds, around trees and nurseries. Mulch besides providing a good and clean look on our gardeners it also protects it because it prevents erosion, controls weeds, adds nutrients and holds water in the ground.Shredded mulch is usually sold as single, double or triple shredded.

Mulch is usually applied towards the beginning of the growing season, and is often reapplied as necessary. It serves initially to warm the soil by helping it retain heat which is lost during the night. This allows early seeding and transplanting of certain crops, and encourages faster growth. As the season progresses, mulch stabilizes the soil temperature and moisture, and prevents sunlight from germinating weed seeds.

Materials used as mulches vary and are made differently.  depend on use, availability, cost, appearance, the effect it has on the soil including chemical reactions, durability, combustibility, how clean it is some can contain weed seeds or plant pathogens.

Have You Ever Wonder How They Name Hurricanes and Storms?

631-993-1039 / 516-659-4716

The actual system isnt complicated everything is based on latitude and longitude of a storm which is how the meteorologists track them, but they needed a system to recognize them.

Back in 1953, the National Weather Service needed to tell the public which storm and the way of such so they picked up the tradition of the naval meteorologist of naming the storms after women just like they used to with ships but in 1979 male names were included.
Usually storm names get recycle but due to the impact some make and all the disaster they cause  hey think is not appropriate to repeat certain names so they take those particular names off the list.
2013 Storm names are :
Andrea, Barry, ChantalDorian, Erin, Fernand, Gabrielle, Humberto, Ingrid, Jerry, Karen, Lorenzo, Melissa, Nestor, Olga, Pablo, Rebekah, Sebastien, Tanya, Van & Wendy

Watering
Some Trees make have troubles getting hydrated due to the snow blockage which makes the tree dry and results on it dying.

NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS

631-993-1039 / 516-659-4716

New Year's resolution is a commitment that a person makes to one or more personal goals, projects, or the reforming of a habit. A key element to a New Year's resolution that sets it apart from other resolutions is that it is made in anticipation of the New Year and new beginnings. People committing themselves to a New Year's resolution generally plan to do so for the whole following year. This lifestyle change is generally interpreted as advantageous.

The top 10 new years resolutions are:

  1. Spend more time with family and friends
  2. Lose weight
  3.  Get fit and eat healthier
  4.  Quit smoking and/or drinking
  5.  Enjoy life and be happy
  6. Have better finances
  7. Reduce, Reuse and Recycle
  8. Travel
  9. Get organize
  10. Volunteering

Many studies conducted by universities have shown that the rate of actual achieved resolutions unfortunately is low, many advice people people sometimes don't start with small goals.

The number one goal that is less achievable seems to be #2 & #3 since the gym becomes people's #1 enemy, this past week a new report came out saying this new years resolutions only last until February .

The only advice we give to people is to make small shot time goals, find a partner in crime either if its to quit smoking or eat healthier even better if you find a gym buddy to has a lot of will power. Be reasonable "Rome wasn't built in a day" because good things take time :)

P.S. Don't forget to take care of your trees at home and prune them regularly so this way you wont have to worry if a natural disaster such as sandy comes around, you'll be ready for this.

GOOD LUCK  EVERYONE!

How To Spot A Dead Tree

631-993-1039 / 516-659-4716

Many times it doesn't necessarily needs to be an specific season when you can spot a dead tree or dead wood. While its true that these can be tough calls at first view, there are many ways you can still recognize when a tree is dead or alive even in the winter time.

at first glance the easiest ways to see its if some parts of the tree are green while others are brown. You may try to pull a little piece and if it gives you some resistance it means its alive while the dead tree will flake off easily. Make sure you check if there are any bumps along the stump, these may be the beginning of new branches being formed which would mean that your tree is pretty much alive still.

You may want to use and small knife and cut an small portion and look for green. The collar of a tree will always be slightly raised and swollen.

You can always contact you local Tree expert.
